The middle section of the EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II is also slightly narrower than the EF 300mm f/2.8 IS II. The photos below show both lenses side-by-side. In terms of hand holding, both lenses are very easy to hand hold, however the EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II feels surprisingly more comfortable to hand hold for very long durations.
The M-focus speed is now controlled by the focus ring and no longer needed. Set it where you like it. This is the 2nd version of the EF 400/2.8L which adds a fluorite element and has improved sharpness. It is a very heavy lens, so think carefully if you intend to carry it around in the field.
